So after 5 months in my house we finaly got some measurable rain and I discovered two roof leaks. I went to the attic, both are coming from the valley were two differeent roof surfaces meet-I may have the terminology wrong but the valley where a gabled roof meets the other one?
In any case one leak on each side, one into a spare bed room the other runs down into the kitchen behind some cabinets causing paint to blister etc.
I need a short term immediate fix with the understanding that I should plan on re-roofing this year. As well as some kind of quick and dirty way to deal with whatever damage I have behind the cabinets to stop mold or whatever. These cabinets were built in, not pre made and hung from the wall.
I am guessing I can pour that black tar stuff along the valleys and work it in hoping to make some kind of seal there.

That "valley" is the spot catching the water flow. The leak may be on any portion of the roof and the water can be flowing under the shingles and working it's way to the valley. Examine the roof carefully and look for damage. Tar may do the trick but only temporary... once the sun works on the tar that will flow down the valley.

As bad as it sounds you could put a big tarp over the roof. I woulld only do this if I had to as it doesn't look very attractive.

I'v considered the tarp thing but in the struggle between my cheepness and my sense of taste, taste is prevailing; for now. I have considered something in the attic to catch and divert the water to a safe outlet. I will probably just try a patch in the valley. It needs to last 6-8 months then I will look at re-roofing the whole house

A 5 gallon pail of Fibered Tar will buy you quite abit of time............

Get a small roll of the black mesh to help hold everything in place.........

A Trowel,+ a pair of Old Gloves will also be nessessary............. :D

Stop the water Before it enters the house,.....
Fighting it After is a Losing Battle....... ;)

When you Reroof,......... Go with Steel.........

I second the steel approach. I had my house done in stell about 8 years ago. We didn't use Channel Drain or any of the other "better" brand steels. We used the cheaper V-crimp, which is one step above corrugated barn tin. It has held up well. We used it solely because it was cheaper and we are not going to live here forever. When we build the new house it'll have the Channel Drain on it.
