Hi all, :D

New to boating and I need to raise my engine due to low rpm as has been suggested in the forum.

My question is, how difficult is this to do and can I do it alone or do I need some extra muscle to help?

I bought the manual for my engine, 1993 88 SPL.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Raising/lowering engine...how hard is it?

I just had to remove and re-hang a 90 Hp (very similar)for a steering cable problem We did it with 3 guys holding the motor and one in the boat to thread the bolts. Not much fun. The problem isn't the weight it is getting the bolts to line up.

Why not go rent an engine lift from an auto parts store? I am never doing it again the shade tree mechanic way!

Also don’t forget that you will need some type of sealant to keep water from ruining your transom. Check with the real mechanics on this board for the correct product. I think 3M 5200 is the right stuff.

One other item, are you sure engine height is the real problem? Where is the anti cav plate relative to the bottom to the hull now?

Mac

Now that I think about it, is it possible to loosen the bolts that are in the slots, remove the ones in the holes and slide it up a bit with a jack or something?

That would only take a few minutes…

Mac

V12mac,

Thanks for the reply,

I havent had the boat out of the water yet, I bought it last friday and live on the same lake as the guy I bought it from.
I just took it from his dock to mine.

I do not know the height of the anti-cav plate to the bottom of the hull. Looking at the back of the transom it appears lower than the bottom of the hull.

Where should they be located in relation to each other?

Thanks

im not sure if this is for all engines... but the antiventilation plate should be between 1-2 inches below the boat. :D
Note: make sure it is not more than 2 inches... other wise it can significantly slow your boat down and lots of water will spray up when running due to incorrect position.
To check the relation.... i suggest you go for a swim haha. :p

On both of my boats it is even with the bottom of the boat.

Even with the bottom would be the lowest point needed....1"-2" above would be better in most cases depending on hull style.

Tie motor to a sturdy tree branch and use trailer tongue for height adjustment. Worked for me with 55 evinrude.
