Hi, been here a few times to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge but first time asking for help. Hope someone here can help with this. I have a trolling motor that is a foot operated 12/24v and the only information I have on it is from a sticker that says Ram 1550. I am not sure if Ram is the manufacturer or whether Ram is just the model but need some information on it to help with a problem that just started. Can anyone tell me anything about this trolling motor? The problem is it only works intermittently. When you first put it in the water it usually doesn't work. If you pull it back up it starts working usually when the motor reaches the mounting bracket in the full up positon. It will continue to work when put back in the water but stops when you turn the motor to change direction. It appears that the problem may be in the wiring somewhere inside the shaft. By necessity this may end up being a do-it-yourself job but at this point I am not even sure how to take it apart. Tried searching for manual and other info but not much luck. Any suggestions for disassembly, other ideas, or any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Ram 1550 Trolling Motor Trouble

Hi, my name is Lazurus....

I wish I could answer your questions. I have come across one of these. A Ram motor with mount and foot peddle I would like to restore.

Mine has a stuck motor. Probably from sitting out in the weather for 20 years, but maybe it has more problems than that.

Question is how to get the thing apart? Well first, does anyone know what an ohm reading of the windings should be? I had about 50 ohms, so I will assume the motor is good. But the motor is stuck, so I would like to get in there and free it up. There is a screw on the "front" - opposite the prop. There is a thing that sticks out pointing downward near the prop. There is the shaft entering the "motor casing". Must these be dissassmbled to open the case?

Thanks for any help.

NBE, "It appears that the problem may be in the wiring somewhere inside the shaft."- but I would not rule out switches that might be loose
