My oil ran out on my 2cycle the other day and I think the engine is shot. It is a 1986 Mercury 90. I'll have the final results this week after the diagnostic, but I fear the worst.
So question is: Cheaper to replace with similar model or repair? I recently got laid-off so I won't be able to buy new.
If I have to replace, where is a good place to shop for older engines like that.
THanks for any input.

Check for rebuilt powerheads at the top of this page. They have yours.

I saw, but it cost more than my entire boat+engine.
Thanks though.

Re: Ran out of oil, oops!

around 300 dallars for pistons
75 dollars for boring (25/cyl)
100 dollars for a gasket set
to start with but you may have damaged more than the top end. I got lucky on my Merc 90 and did it for under 500 dollars. Its been 3 years and it is still running strong but it soulds lika bucket of bolts. My cylinder liner sliped down its barrel so I went ahaead and pinned them all in place with brass tapered pinns befor I bored. You may want to ask around how often they do that and decide if you want to go that route while you are in there. I would since the factory neglected to supply a positive mechanical lock on the liners. By the way I am always looking for sparesw if you dont fix the old one e-mail me Robbyusa@aol.com
Im just a hobbyist so talk to the pros
Robby
