I just ran out of polyester layup resin while rebuilding my engine bay compartment (transom, stringers, ect..). I am almost done. I only have the motor mounts left. I was told to go get some epoxy resin to finish the job. Can I epoxy over polyester resin?
Thanks in advance.

Yes you can, but poly is cheaper and at least around here a lot easier to find locally. Could it be that you were told to use epoxy on the motor mounts because it's stronger?

I was told to use epoxy because I am almost finished. I cant find poly layup resin anywhere, but I think Homedepot has the epoxy resin.

Re: Ran out of resin.

poly is farr easyer to find than epoxy........

id just run to a local dealer.....look in the yellow pages....or call a fiberglass repair shop....even automotive....just buy a gallon from them.

yes, you can use epoxy over poly.....but not the other way round....so once you go epoxy.....you keep using it........

now....the stuff you get from wallmart...(poly)....is waxed....that means, if you apply another layer after it curing, you gotta grind off the top layer of wax.

i wouldnt worry bout the epoxy being stronger in the engine compartment.

even tho, epoxy is way stronger. poly is twice as strong as what you need.

kinda like using a steel girder to hold up a aluminum backyard shed.

Oops is correct! BTW, The "fiberglass resin" at Home Depot (Bondo brand) is polyester. The only epoxy I've ever seen at the big orange store was the small adhesive kits in the double syringe.

i386, Thanks, found that out. If I use the waxed poly (bondo), can I stick two boards togeather with it while it is still wet?
