I have a 78 Ranger V178 with a 115hp Johnson that runs like a spotted tailed ape. I have everything in very good running shape and I use it a lot.

The transom has a couple of cracks on the top side outward from where the motor rests. 9 One on each side ) The cracks apear to be in the gel coat of the fiberglass. The cracks do not run downward on the transom.

Am I in trouble with my boat? Who could I see about it and is there anything that can be done in this situation?

Thanks,

Alpinegold

Re: Ranger Transom

Well, you could be in a heap o' crap or not. Depends on how deep those cracks go. On pretty much all FRP boats the gel coat and underlaying fiberglass is what protects your inner wood from water intrusion. If either of them have been sacrificed then the water will find an entry point and the inner wood will start to deteriorate and rot. If this has recently occured then you should be O.K. - just make appropriate repairs and you should be good to go. This link might help some:http://www.boatus.com/boattech/casey/17.htm :D
