What's a good FREE program for opening/extracting .rar files. Not sure why I have such problems with that format, but I do.
I used to use izarc.org on my old computer, but when I went there now, Norton blew a gasket with the download from brothersoft .com

Windows 7 home.

Re: RAR Files

Stuffit expander will do them too. I like WinRAR though.

WinRAR is only a trial version, they you have to buy it, or am I missing something.

Don,

I have been using WinRAR for years and never purchased it, after the trial period, the only thing that changes is you get a pop up telling you it has expired and you need to buy it, but it continues to work with no problems.

For both WinRAR and Stuffit, the expanders are unlimited use (unless they've changed something). I don't get any pop-ups using the expander. If you're trying to compress files, it probably gives you a pop-up. Though, I think Windows 7 has Winzip native in the OS, right?

I use 7zip, got it free and have been using it for over 3 years now.

Re: RAR Files

Sorry guys, forgot about this thread. I did try 7zip, what a hassle, but it eventually opened the file which wasn't worth much anyway. So far, with all the hassle I have had with .rar files and the need for special programs to extract them, I find they are not worth the problems, and in the future will just avoid them and do something different.

Don,

Now a days, you will find many programs in the .RAR format, especially the large ones, with my wife running an internet business it is a necessary reality to have a good program. Look around, they are out there..

Don,

I'll give you a copy of the full unabridged WinRar program if you want it.

Re: RAR Files

Thanks for the offer, but not necessary, I did figure out how to make the 7 zip work, which is good enough for the 1 or 2 times per year I need to open a .rar file. I really don't download many programs and even less big files, this one was just some brushes for photoshop, and they weren't what I was wanting anyway . Oh well.
