I have a Ted Williams 7.5 Electric start Model Number 574-60211 I think the original battery pack is shot. Does anyone know if there is a way to bypass the pack? I would like to start using the electric start insted of pull starting it. Thanks for any help
Re: Rare Ted Williams 7.5 Electric start

My after market manual doesn't mention a battery pack.Only that it uses a 12 volt battery. The battery should be connected with the negative to ground. The motor has a combination starter/generator.
If the motor has been run without a battery there is a fuse a diode and possibly the armature that may be damaged. You could give it a try to see if it will crank but if the armature is damaged it may not.If it cranks won't charge you don't need the generator to keep the battery charged.
A good quality battery will start the motor many, many times before it needs a charge.
You could ask the scott guy at
web.a-znet.com/~scottguy.He may be able to give some details on the system.

Here is a pic of what the battery pack looks like. I'm thinking of just disconnecting it and trying a 12v batt. Do you think it would work? The back no longer holds a charge. Its a nicad pack.

I don't see why a 12 volt battery wouldn't work.
I you wanted to keep it small I think a garden tractor battery would work.

Some day you'll have to pull apart the NiCd pack and replace the cells. They're probably just standard D or C cells wired together. You can solder up a battery pack if you're quick about making the joints.

That's a very nifty outboard. I agree with steelespike, should be fine to use a lead acid.
