Rattling noise in 1994 Evinrude 225?

My motor has recently developed this noise that sounds like small rocks being shaken in a plastic jar. Sounds like something loose but I cannot find anything. Motor does it at cruising speeds and noise is louder when motor is under minimal strain. When the boat is on plane and motor is all the way down the noise is not there or barely noticeable. When I trim up the motor and reduce drag the noise is louder. Any ideas what I should look for?

Thanks

Hope and pray it ain't a rod bearing or cage.
(Which it was with engine #2 of 3 this year alone)

Mike

Check the bolts in the upper bearing housing (under the flywheel). Just for kicks you may want to check the gear oil.

Good luck!

While you are looking under the flywheel - see if the flywheel magnets are still tight and evenly spaced.

Just a thought!

Bearing housing was not loose but lightly torqued down bolts to make sure. Gear lube was clean and full. Flywheel magnets seem to be fine...I cannot move them and they are evenly spaced. Noise does seem to be coming from top of motor. Can anyone think of anything else that could possible be rattling??

Thank You

Does it do it in neutral, forward and reverse?

If it doesn't make a sound in neutral (try various rpms) it's probably something to do with the gears...

But regardless check the starter motor gear against the flywheel, see if the sound is coming from that? Could be a cause.
