I went to the local boatin' store and asked for an impeller kit for my 1988 454... they came back with something that was made for the newer engines - they said it was much simpler and should fit right on... does that sound right?

You're lucky they gave you anything.
While it may be a 1988 454, a 454 doesn't have an impeller kit.
The information you need is things like Volvo, Mercruiser, OMC, Yamaha, etc. type of drive, exact model number and/or serial number of the engine. Then they may be able to get a little closer.

LOL... I said mercruiser and I said I think it's a Bravo 1... either way, I think the kit is 46-807151A14... can anyone verify that? The new "update" to it I think is 18-3150

Re: Raw impeller update?

Do you have the one piece or two piece pump housing? The number you gave (46-807151A14) is not an impeller kit, it housing and all for a Bravo drive. It's the one piece housing, and can use to replace the 2 piece housing.
But that is a lot of extra money if all you want to do is replace the impeller for preventive maintenance reasons.

Well you have a Bravo. (I don't know why I assumed it was an Alpha before...)

The 18-xxxx number is a Sierra (or Napa number)

You can to Mercury Parts Express and you can look it up if you want. I bought a whole new(single piece) pump housing and impeller (kit) from eBasic Power last summer for about $60.

Here's some pictures you can compare yours to...

Cheers,

Rick

Ok I see... good info (still wet behind the ears and will be for a long time!)... I'll double check what's on there now and if it's the new housing, I'll just get the impeller/gasket kit instead of the one with the housing. :D

Re: Raw impeller update?

ya knoiw, I looked and looked at the lead thread in this post, still did not see what we were discussing, guess I am blind like DonS.
however we did get a bit of identification in the second :).
before buying just the impeller kit open up your pump for inspection, housings and endplates wear out as well as impellers.
I have seen the pump cams worm smooth off when the DIYS brings it it with an overheat complaint yet had just changed the impeller.
a new impeller with worn out body parts still dont work :).
