Raw Water Pump Issues

I'm still having issues with my pump sucking water but I believe I've narrowed it down as a result of some things I've encountered while trying to figure this problem out.

After taking boat out of storage, the pump will not suck water from the muffs/hose. I take it to the lake and it works fine and cools the engine. I put the boat back in the driveway with outdrive in up position, put the muffs on and it sucks water fine. If I put the outdrive down and allow the water to drain out and try again, it will NOT suck water. If I raise the outdrive up while the engine is running, it will again suck water and stop if I put it down.

Is this the fact the pump just doesn't produce enough suction to pull water in when the outdrive is all the way down and when I raise it up it gets a hand from gravity and works? Why does it work in the lake fine?

I'm kind of leaning towards the pump being just good enough to suck water with some help. Do I need a new pump? The pump internals are a bit grooved due to some sand being sucked a few years ago. This problem seemed to develop after this encounter.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

it works in the lake because the water level is higher than your leak. if the pump body is scored, it needs to be replaced.

also, when you have the muffs on, there is an extra hole in the bottom of many VP drives that should be plugged.

Are you saying I may have a leak? Would I check the water hose in the outdrive? I'm assuming you have to pull the drive to do so? Where is this "hole" you speak of?

Also, why does it work when I tilt the drive up when it's out of the water?
