Raw Water Pump Leaking Weephole After Replacing Impeller

After replacing the impeller and o-ring, my bottom weephole (6 o'clock) on the raw water pump started leaking. This was just a garden hose test in the driveway so I took it out on the fresh water lake and the leak had stopped once on. Was the new impeller the cause of the leak? The impeller and o-ring were not used for 3 weeks from the time of installation and were well lubricated with glycerin, but did the o-ring dry out before I gave it the driveway test? In the lake test I did not have any temperature issues so it appears the impeller and raw water pump were working fine. Should I 1) just keep an eye on it, 2) assume that my raw water pump is in the initial stages of failure and will need replacing, or 3) wait for the leak again and try replacing the shaft seal?

The boat is a 2003 Regal 2200 Bowrider, Volvo Penta 5.7 GiD.

Thanks- Jerry

I'm not familiar with your engine but sounds like the pump seal is going. There are seals around the shaft that turns the impeller which need to be replaced when the weep hole starts leaking.
I assume you replaced the o-ring for the impeller cover but not the shaft seals.

Thanks for the reply. No, I didn't replace the shaft seal and have heard mixed results for doing so. Some say it will work, others say it won't and only replacing the pump will cure the leak. I most likely will try the cheap fix of replacing the shaft seal and see where that gets me

I've done a couple shaft seals with good results. If the shaft is worn you have to replace that too. Usually there's a kit with the shaft, seals, impeller (save for next year) and everything you need.

I have experienced EXACTLY what you are seeing with a 5.0L GXiB. Run engine on hose in driveway, water out the weep hole. Run engine with boat in water, no water out the weep hole. I can't explain it, except to speculate that it may have to do with the pressure of the water delivery. Other people have posted about this same situation. I first noticed the weep two seasons ago. I just keep an eye on it.

Four Winns 214. has the correct answer, the inlet is pressurised whilst on the hose. The real downside to this is that whilst in the water you are probably pulling air through the same seal. You need to remove the pump 3 x 8mm Allen bolts and replace the seal, you would be well advised to replace the bearing at the same time.

There are also Viton seals that can be bought both twin and single lip which might last a bit longer for not much more than the VP part. ID 16mm x 28mm OD x 7mm wide. Google should be able to find them for you. I have one on the shelf ready to go into the pump next time it leaks, but not tried it yet!

Sealing ring Volvo Penta. Part No. 827247

Re: Raw Water Pump Leaking Weephole After Replacing Impeller

I am having the same issue with my 05 Larson Senza 186 5.0GL, Overheated because I was lazy and wanted to see if I could get another trip out of the impeller, replaced the Impeller and replaced the shaft seal next to the impeller and still have a leak through the weep hole. I put seal lube on the seal, should it be installed dry or use the Glycerin (ordered 2 seals in case I screwed up).

Does anyone know where I can buy the rebuild Kit for the impeller?

Thanks everyone for the help.
