Raw Water Pump

I have a short block chevy witha volvo penta outdrive. The raw water pump is leaking and my mechanic recommended me to replace it. In shopping for a pump I see lot's of pump kits. My question is can I purchase a kit and rebuild the pump vs. replace it? It has a Johnson pump 10-24228-1.

Ayuh,... I've read Don stating that when those pumps Leak through the main seals, they're Junk...
I guess the effort,+ expense is bad enough, but the pump body is usually destroyed in the process of rebushinging 'em...
