I am going to be installing a raw water washdown pump in my '84 Grady Offshore.

Questions:

1) where should I install the pump? should I install it in the engine compartment? the boat is an I/O.
2) should I try to locate the output near the middle of the boat?
3) I have also heard of using this same pump for live wells?

mount it where its easy to access. most shureflow blaster type pumps have an auto pressure switch and can run dry and can stand a static lift of 3 to 5 feet. most rubber impeller type pumps can stand a static head of 3 to 5 feet but cannot stand a dry run condition long. most fixed plastic impeller type pumps must be mounted below the hulls static water line and wont self prime at all.
I prefer the shurflow pulse type pumps with pressure switches cause I can mount them above the hull static water line, leave them on for periods of time and with a t fitting and valving they can be used as livewell fill pumps as well as washdown pumps.

a Plastic impellar type can be added above the water line however you have to add a primer bulb to the line to get a prime. just a thought. My livewell pump was installed in the motor well below the water line and a diverter valve was installed in the line at the rear bulkhead to give me a washdown line. I have an automatic livewell switch that I can switch to manual to wash the fish goo off of the floor when I need to. If your not using a livewell you have many choices. Theres nothing wrong with an addition below the waterline if installed properly.
