Anyone know why my Sonar sometimes looses bottom? Usually in shallow (4ft or less) weedy water. It will come back after I get into clearer (less weedy) water.

Re: RAYMARINE DS600

I'd also like to see the answer to this because I am planning on buying a new DS600. Any other problems or comments on this unit?

Re: RAYMARINE DS600

The DS is a good unit. More than likely it's the weed causing the problem. The unit is getting saturated from the returns from the weeds and can’t calculate the depth because of it. Try manually adjusting the sensitivity and gain and see what happens.

Re: RAYMARINE DS600

I have this unit with the thru hull. Sometimes I lose bottom when it's under 4 feet and the currents ripping, probablt a combo of the turbulence and silt. Other than that it's a great unit. Maybe we're expecting a bit too much? I thing in 3 feet of water you should be using your eyes, and maybe a pole.....

Re: RAYMARINE DS600

I have the ds400x (same internals - different screen). I only lose bottom momentarily if I go over a dense school of baitfish or a big chunk of weeds. I think it is the "auto" features trying to interpret what it is seeing and responding by making a series of changes. I haven't had any issues in shallow water. The Ray A series finders are powerful dual frequency units. In very shallow water, I think it is a little overqualified for the job.

I love the unit and would buy one again in a hearbeat. It is the best unit that I have owned.

Re: RAYMARINE DS600

Thanx for all the posts.

Other than this issue the unit is excellent. Great menu options, NEMA Interface with GPS and excellent bright Sun displays. Great readings at 40 - 50mph. I love the option to dosplay a line which indicated an adjustable distance behind the boat! Now I can tell if fish or structure is 50 or 250 feet behind the boat.

I'll try the manual adjustments.

Re: RAYMARINE DS600

I have sent my DS400X back to the importer twice because it could not find the bottom when in less than 2 m of water unless gain and range were put in manual.

When the unit was turned off, it reverted back into auto and you then needed to go back through the complicated menu system again. The second time, I was told the unit is working as designed and I need to leave it on permanently or get better at selecting manual.

What I am interested in is - Does anybody know how to change the software so it holds the manual settings when the unit is turned off?
