Is an RDSL-23 just the long shaft version of a 1961 Johnson RDS-23 40hp? The shaft only measured 18.5" from mount to cavplate though... shouldn't it be more like 20"? and what are those wacko wing things sticking out the back for? thx :)

Re: RDSL-23 Johnson 40hp

To determine whether a engine is a short, long, or extra long shaft, measure from the underside of the transom bracket (the part that sits upon the transom) down to the cavitation plate (plate just above the prop).

In the general area of:

15" = Short shaft
20" = Long shaft
25" = Extra long shaft

The actual measure of the driveshaft is another matter.

If those "wacko wings" (Hydrofoil Stabilizers) are attached to the cavitation plate, they're to help get the boat up on a plane quickly.

That's what I thought but it was not 15" or 20", it was in the middle. And the wacko wings come off the back of the engine where the cover meets the base.

BTW, the 'wacko wings' can be seen here on the photo of the 40 hp on the bottom right of the page:

What are they for? decoration? I can't see any other use for them? Maybe laying the engine down on the back? But I don't see then on any other models?

Probably just a long shaft converted over the years. And I always thought those were some sort of carrying handles. Who knows!

They can be used for carrying but they're not very handy. They are actually feet used to support the motor when laying it down on it's back, rather than have the cowl take all the weight.

Or, if you don't like that, they're bumpers, in case of a rear-end collision.

Or, they're where the tow-boat would push you if you're having to "kick" it off. When he gets you going fast enough, slam it into gear to start it.

Got... it... they're decoration! And very much in the way when trying to get around the back of the boat in a tight garage! Ok, I already took em off! :)
