Re: 1963 Hydrodyne with a Volvo Penta engine

I have the same boat. The engine is a classic volvo B18, considered bulletproof by many. Of course, I didn't know that when I bought it. But shortly thereafter, there was a Yahoo blurb about some guy putting the 3 millionth mile on his little old Volvo...the B1800 I think it was called...with the B18 engine. Mine started right up but a few freeze plugs were blown out. Take off the manifold and it's easy to get to them...I wasted time before deciding to do that. One place to find parts for this engine and some marine parts as well is called swedishtreasures.com. Many hard to find parts for this boat. One question I have, if anyone knows the answer...Can you swap out a AQ100 outdrive for a newer(and electrically tiltable)270, 280 or 290 drive? Without cutting up the transom and putting in a new transom shield?

Welcome. No there is no compatibility between the 100 and 200-290 series of outdrives.

Thanks Capt. Do you know if the u-joint drive from the engine would fit if I replaced the transom shield and outdrive? Or would that be alot of fit problems too. Thanks in advance if you know anything about this.

a few years back, the VP office sent me a copy of the parts book for my 1964 AQ180 with 200 model drive... didn't even charge me postage. It's a great resource for cross referencing parts. Surprising what is still available too - like head gaskets. in stock even.

Do you have such an engine, genuine Volvo B36 V8 with a sterndrive ? They are rare and interesting, can we hear more about yours, somewhere; photos, video?

I wouldn't claim to know anything about swapping from the 100 to to a "newer type". If you really like the hull, and its in good shape, and/or it has sentimental value, I would suggest swapping the entire drivetrain to something that still has parts available. Those antique drivetrains were great in their day, but...

IMO.
