Hello my name is tom, my father in law just bought a 1986 four winns and when he got it home he tried to start and it would only crank. He took the fuel line off and cranked it and no fuel was coming out. Do you have to prime these mech fuel pumps. the marina drained all the fuel last winter and he just put some in after he bought it was just wondering if you need to prime the fuel pump or if you could help. the diag. moves up and down when he cranks if that is any help

Also make sure you put enough fuel into the boat to at least cover the pickup inside of the tank. IE~ if you have a 90 gallon tank and only put 3 gallons in, it might not be enough.

To answer your question directly, no you do not need to prime mechanical fuel pumps.
