RE: 40 hp merc won't start

Laddies, Rodc, Amd Rules; Thanks for the previous tips. Cleaned carbs and engine now starts and will run. I am still afraid to let it run more than 5-10
seconds. I am not seeing any water. This motor does have a thermostat. How long can I run without seeing water and not damage powerhead? How do you check water pump, remove thermostat and look for water?

Glad to hear you have it running. My first suggestion is to reply to your original topic rather than creating a new one. No big deal, but it helps others to see the history and provide additional ideas/thoughts.

Im surprised your 40hp has a thermostat, most don't.

If it were me I'd try revving the throttle just slightly (~1000rpm) for 30 seconds or so to give the water a chance to show up.

If you don't know the last time the water pump was inspected, I would highly recommend it. As a minimum, its a good idea to put in a new impeller. The process invloves removing the lower unit. A service manual is a good idea. Its pretty easy, but the manual would show you step by step what is required.

Are you running the motor on muffs, or submerged in water?

If you have a set of muffs put them on the engine and turn the water high if the water comes out of the telltale you have for sure a bad impeller if not start it and see if it pumps when, you will not hurt your engine if it runs for a minite or so at idle with out the pump working

Sorry I do not have a thermostat. I was relying on info from the service book. The Merc site shows no t'stat for this motor. I am running on muffs. I plan to replace the impeller if the pump will not produce water after 1 min of run time. I'll be back to let you know the results.
Thanks again for the help.
