I have a 21' gready white walk around and the doors and wooden molding are in bad shape and i want to re-due them. I wanted to know what kind of wood i should use i want to paint it white and make it look like a newer boat. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Re: Re-doing doors

Any hardwood should work (oak, ash, teak, maple).

Re: Re-doing doors

If the wood is TEAK it is best to refinish it with teak oil.

Re: Re-doing doors

You could use oak but it rots fast in a marine environment. Why not re-finish what you have?

Then for the finish you can use rustoleum or any marine paint such as brightside from interlux or easypoxy.

You might want to use a polymer type plastic. I redid my hatches with some 1/2" white that I got at a place that sells Plexi and other materials in different thickness, and reused all my hardware. looks great and will never rot again, Also made a new dash gauge panel out of some thick dark plexi that looks great as well. I think the white polymer was about $60 bucks for a 4'x4' sheet.

Frycztech, I just bought some sheets of 3/4 A/C ply from Home Depot for $30 a sheet. Same exterior glue used in marine ply and a helluva lot cheaper. Great sanded finish for painting and easy to work with.

I've used plywood or reuse the original wood if it is not rotten. Then and use white Formica (Wilsonarte, plastic laminate, etc.) on both sides. I finish the edges with a black T molding. Looks nice.

I too like the idea of poly though.

I would check local to your area ( not mentioned in your profile) for a place that sells plexiglass sheets ( not a hardware store) from there you should be able to find the colored polymer sheets. By the way the polymer can be machined just like wood so adding a nice routered edge for a clean finish is a wiz.
