Re-found treasure!!!

My grandmother passed away a few months ago and we had to clear out her home. In the process there were a bunch of boxes in a closet that said, "Old Photos". I finally got to looking through them last night, there are hundreds of them, and talk about bringing back memories!

Sat with Mrs. Bubba most of the evening identifying all the people and places the photos were taken and trying to put some notes on the backs for later use. I plan on scanning them and putting them on CD for other family members.

The thing that struck me the hardest was to difference between my memory and the photos. I remember our home as a young child as being MUCH bigger. The photos depict a family that was less then financially successful but I don't remember being that poor. All the kids, cousins, siblings, neighbors are bare foot in the summer photos and I barely even remembered that. (Maybe that?s why to this day I like to pull my shoes off and walk through the grass while Mrs. Bubba worries I'll step on something.)

There are pictures of my grandparents when they were first married and my grandmother was a STONE FOX. Funny but I never remembered her that way. In my mind?s eye she was always just grandma. Guess I figured that was what she had always been. My grandfather looked dashing in his naval uniform and was a lot thinner than I ever remembered him.

There were several photo's of my grandparents with their first real car, they had pickup trucks a plenty but this was their first car, a Studebaker Firehawk and they were obviously very proud of it. I have faint memories of riding in it as a kid and if memory serves I didn't like it because if I was too dirty I couldn't get in.

Another thing that struck me was how many photos were taken while fishing and on the water. Seems that has always been apart of our lives. LOTS of photo's with a dozen or more family members on the river bank fishing and just hanging out. Beers in hand... I'd forgotten my grandfather liked Papst Blue Ribbon and usually had one open during down time on the water.

One photo of me was like stepping back in time, my 6th. birthday when I got my first bicycle. I don't know what the world record for miles on a bike is but I think I had to be a contender. I rode it for years and I rode it everywhere. But that was back when a kid could go out and parents didn't have to worry about the weirdness. I can remember being told, "Go out and ride your bike, it's too nice for you to be in the house and under foot".

Another memorable shot was when I turned 12 and got my first tool box with a set of tools of MY OWN. (The box is long gone but I do still have a few of the tools from it.) Truth be told, my father and grandfather were tired of me "borrowing" their tools. It's sort of funny in today's world but back then it was just assumed every guy needed a tool box and tools. If we took a vehicle / tractor to the shop, there was something drastically wrong with it.

Know what? I think I need to fire up our camera and add to the collection for my kids to look through someday.

Re: Re-found treasure!!!

Yep, pictures are such a treasure. I have my parents photos (taken as 1/2 slide film strips) that I have to finish scanning in. Tried to get it done "professionally" but no one seemed to be able to deal with the 1/2 slide technology of that time. Dad loved it because he could get 72 pictures out of a 36 exposure roll of film, but no one today seems to have the technology to scan the negatives or the film strips they produced. That means I get to do it, and it is very time consuming.

My wife and kids complain about my picture taking, but they love to view vacations past and remember them. I also keep journals of every vacation so there is a written account of what happend ... something I learned from my mother and enjoyed going back and reading of our summer adventures when I was a wee lad.

WOW, this is kinda funny this came up.
On the weekend we went to the old families homestead if you will, grandma died 14 years ago or so and willed the house to my mom and aunt.
Well it was decided to sell the house and we went down for a last look, will start my own thread with the pics later.

You bring up some really good points about documenting the pictures. My Grandma used to write dates/time, heck even temps that day and we all laughed at her. Now I look at my photos with no dates and have to rely on my memory. My parents have about 10 huge photo albums that have all the family history, on a rainy day it's some of the best stuff ever.

Re: Re-found treasure!!!

I am a HUGE fan of taking photo's of just about everything.. my wife often wonders why I save random pictures from car's and trucks I used to own, and even a few of an old quad I had picked up to try and restore (turned into an epic FAILURE, but regardless, lol).. She finally realized WHY I take/save all those, whenever my grandmother passed in April of '11, I ended up with 5 of those huge rubbermaid containers FULL of family photo's from my mom's attic.... I spent many nights on our living room floor, after the kids were asleep, and just slowly went through EVERY photo (10's of thousands), laughing at a lot, weeping at others..

Point is Bubba, I think you have an EXCELLENT idea of taking/adding to those family collections of photo's... years from now, your kids and grandkids can look back at those, and feel those same emotions that you and I have experienced.. I think the only that even comes close to pictures stirring up memories, is hearing certain songs that kinda 'take you back'...

Without pictures I have to rely on someone else to bring up the moment.

Re: Re-found treasure!!!

My family got a collage of photos done for my 50th birthday (3 years ago) Had a lot of them sent over from England. My parents / grandparents on them and other relatives. Brought back some wonderful memories.
Mrs Ken and I have been taking family photos so often we have literally thousands stored on our computer and back up copies on external drive and CD's. No reason not to in this digital photo age. If you don't like you can delete.

Re: Re-found treasure!!!

Good topic Bubba :)

My family has always taken lots of pictures that date back to the 1900?s
For my parents 50[SUP]th [/SUP]anniversary, we scanned several photo albums and made a slide show presentation to display with a projector while my dad/mom/aunts and uncles narrated about each photo. It was a huge success, and we laughed and laughed at some of the stories that were told. I don?t remember how many copies we made of that slide show to give away to relatives, but they were numerous.
With the digital pictures of today, it is easy to snap away on about anything. The pictures/movies from modern cell phones are even high quality. So make memories and have some laughs.

Thanks for posting this, Bubba! I love looking at old pictures and it's a way to keep family history and connections fresh in your mind. I've always taken pictures since I was about 11, and fortunately have been pretty good at keeping them organized, so really we have a pictorial family history consisting of many thousands of photos. Can't get enough of them. Really enjoyed your story!

Re: Re-found treasure!!!

I love old family photos too. Fortunately my grandfather on mom's side loved to photograph everything.
I'm in possession of all the known photos of my dads side of the family. I even bought a small fire safe to keep them in.
Need to scan and copy them for the rest of the family but it's so darn time consuming I never get around to it.

My two favorites are framed and on the wall, one is my grandfather sitting in a boat holding up a stringer of fish.
The other is of my parents on their wedding day standing on the steps of the church with my four grandparents, it was taken in 1951.

They can't scan the negatives, then photo shop them apart?
