SX-M outdrive had a water in the oil and in the bellows so I removed it and did a pressure test as I have read in my shop manual and here in the forum, found the leak in the shift mechanism seal and changed that. Re did the pressure test and everything is good now. Since I had water in the bellows I figured I would change them out and the gimble bearing and seal also. So far everything I have read on here has been good and informative but now I am at a complete loss, I can get the outdrive on as far as the bolts and then it is stuck. Tried to put it in gear to turn the yoke but that seems stuck unless we pull the outdrive back a bit. Checked the alignment with an alignment tool and even that appears good. Thought maybe shop gave me the wrong gimble bearing but cross checked it and the Sierra part number appears good. Is there a trick? Is it possible the gimble bearing is just a little too tight and needs to be forced, any ideas on how I can beat this thing into place without damaging anything? Any ideas are appreciated.

If you put too much grease on the 2 o-rings on the drive shaft, that can possibly prevent you from getting it on further.

Apart from the grease issue. Put it in gear and rotate the prop and you can usually hear the splines ridding on the flywheel coupling.
Also make sure you have the flanges of the drive and the pivot housing PERFECTLY parallel in all planes.

Made sure everything was clean on the shaft, took bellows apart to see if I could view anything. O-rings weren't even up to the gimbal bearing and the outdrive wouldn't go any further. Thinking I will pull the gimbal and see if I can get another new one to try. I can't see any other possibility causing this.

So there is absolutely no corrosion at all on the drive shaft?

By the way, you do want to grease the splines.

If the alignment bar goes all the way in, there is nothing in the gimbal bearing stopping the ujoint shaft.

Does the alignment bar go in all the way? easily?

Well got it back together, even though the alignment appeared to be correct, I found that it was out enough to cause the yoke to jam in the gimbal bearing. Once I raised the motor a 1/4 inch everything went together like butter. Thanks for your help everyone.

1/4" is a lot. The alignment bar needs to slide in with almost no effort. If you had to adjust 1/4" I bet that wasn't happening. You should also get into the habit of reading the grease marks when you slide the alignment bar back out. That is a good way to see which way the alignment needs to be moved.
