Hi, I am about to re-install my alpha outdrive. I have a coupla basic questions about it: The new gasket kit i got for it has one too many rubber o rings then I could find places for. It looks like I need an o ring for where the raw water passes through and 3 o rings on the input shaft. My kit came with 5 o rings. It also looks like the ones i suspect are for the input shaft are narrower then the ones that are currently on there.

My second question is what kind of grease to use on my gimbal bearing? one of these guys at the local marine place said to jut use OMC wheel bearing grease, but i wanted to get a second opinion.

My third question has to do with the water I found in the bellows. I had a little bit of standing water in there, I could not find the source. The u joints were not in the least bit rusty, so I assume it was not in there for long. I found no apparent cracks, or leaks of any kind for that matter in the bellows. Anyone know where the water could have come from?

Thanks in advance!!

change the bellows while your that far, and you don't have to worry.

3 orings on the shaft.
1 oring on the water pickup hole (b) in pic below.
1 Large quad ring (a) in pic below.

The ones on the shaft will look wider because they are mashed down. If they are to big, you will never get the drive on.

Regarding your water, I would replace the bellows. There is only 2 places the water can come from, a small hole in the bellows, or a damaged ring (a above).

Mercruiser has a grease called " Ujoint & Gimbal Bearing Grease ", they also have a grease for the splines on the shaft. It's called " Engine Coupler Spline Grease "

One more possibility for where the water came in, the inside of the boat.Check the inside of the boat for a waterline.Usually if the waterline inside the boat got high enough to go back through the gimbal bearing you will find alot of the motor components have been submerged and need to be replaced. Anytime water gets in the bellows there are many items that should be replaced or you could be risking catastrophic failure. The gimbal bearing, u-joints,gear end driveshaft yoke and yoke seal, which also entails new gear oil.
