RE: merc 40 hp 4 cyl won't start

I tried what you guys suggested (squirting fuel into carbs). Engine will start by doing this. I have fuel up to carbs.(removed hose at carb and squeezed primer bulb) How do you check float bowls for fuel? Also, I am using flushing muff. How long should it take to see water from telltale under cowling base? I see none with flusher attached and water turned on.

Water should come in a few seconds, it's possible to remove the bowl covers and free the inlet needles but save yourself alot of greif and pull the carbs and clean them

rcb13o, I have the same beast but a 1992 model year and it takes about 10 seconds before I see any water at the telltale. New pump and impeller this summer. Sometimes seems like forever waiting for the stream to appear.

The bowls are removed by unscrewing the single small bolt at the bottom of the bowl. The top carb has a barbed fitting that connects to the primer solenoid. It also holds the bowl on. If you pull that hose off the barb you should have gas drip out from the bowl. In order to get at the carbs you will need to unbolt and move the oil reservoir tank out of the way.

When the fuel system is primed, gas is fed thru the top carb first and then to the lower carb.

With my motor not running, and the muffs hooked up I never see water at the telltale... -until- it is running. Then like Rod it takes a few seconds for the water to circulate through and fill up all the cavities. Larger motors have a thermostat which delays it even more.

Sure sounds like those carbs need cleaning.
