Hi all - repowering my rebuilt 1967 StarCraft Bahama and have an option for either a 1998 2 cylinder Johnson 50hp SPL J50TSLECC or a 1995 3-cylinder 50hp J50DTLEOS

both motors in decent shape - my local shop is recommending the 3 cylinder.

any pros/cons to consider? Weight difference, maintainability, etc…. We just run the boat around the lake for a few weeks each summer,…

The 3 cylinder motor should run smoother and should weigh a bit more. However, in my experience, a lot of shops recommend the motor they make the most $$ on.

The 2 cylinder motor has a gearcase that is less than " robust " and the 3 cylinder should be your choice.----But do a compression test before spending the beer tokens.

The 3 will have slightly more Torque over a wider Rpm Range, because it is easier to Tune the Exhaust on a 3 cylinder than on a 2. It will likely have slightly better Fuel Economy as well, also due to the Exhaust Tuning.

Racer points out an Important difference regarding Longevity

Having the same Price Tag, doesn't tell you what they paid for each engine, hence the amount they will make.
