Re-powering a non-Vortec block with a new Vortec long block?

I know that I would most likely have to re-power sometime in the next couple of years, and I am simply trying to gather some information ahead of time.

Currently I have a 1995 Mercruiser 5.7 TBI/EFI with a Bravo III. The engine has a MEFI-1 computer and a Delco EST/HEI distributor.

If I was going to re-power, I would like to purchase the newer style (1997 and up) Vortec long block, due to the increased power and [hopefully] fuel economy.

I know that right off the bat I will need a new intake manifold to go along with it, but I am curious as to what else I will need to make the swap? I was told that I would have to send my computer (MEFI-1) to have it re-programmed to with with the new engine + I need to buy, or make, a custom harness, but this is where things get foggy.

Agree with getting the ECM reprogrammed, but don't think you will need another wiring harness.

Pull the injectors and have them cleaned and flow tested.
