I have a 1998 johnson evinrude frankenstien of a motor, that i put together out of a scrapyard for around 75 bucks it runs great always fires up but i noticed this spring that i had water in the lower unit fluid, I was wondering if anyone has any tips on replacing the seals in the lower unit or maybe a step by step guide. any help would be greatly appreciated !!!!

Did you use new seals on the fill / drain plug when you changed the oil? These are designed for one time use and are the usual suspects in lower unit leaks.

no i didnt, I didnt realize that they were single use. I will definately replace them and see if that stops the water. the reason i figured it needs re sealed is that when i got it out of the scrapyard i took it completely apart to see how the gears looked inside of it. they looked fine but i just slapped it back together with the old seals and hoped for the best..... so yesterday i changed the lower unit fluid and had it out on the river today when i got home i puled the top plug to see what the fluid looked like and as i got it out it shot out fluid at me like it had built up pressure in there. dont know what thats all about....

Re: re-sealing a lower unit

the fluid that came out at me was the same color as when i put it in that morning it wasnt milky. last year i needed the lower unit on the last day of trapping season to pull my traps so i took a chance after tearing it down and inspecting it to run it. i didnt check the fluid when i was done. I checked it this spring and when i pulled the lower plug three drops of water came out. so im assuming that it leaks.
