Re sealing lower unit 58 Bigtwin 35

I am in the process of resealing the lower unit. I have had some water intrusion. I have the unit apart. Bushings, bearings and all surfaces are in good shape. I would like to replace the small o ring in the shift rod bushing too. I understand the bushing needs to be driven out with a long tapered drift or punch. From what direction does it come out. Top to bottom or from the bottom up. This o ring is the original.

bottom to top, I use a spade drill bit turn upside down & then a 6 inch socket extension placed over the point on the spade blade,
