$50 sewing machine & ebay vinyl, $250 +/-, $20-25 thread & $20-25 supplies = < $350. Your vinyl is in good enough shap to use patterns. If the cushion foam isn't shot. Find & follow both WoodOnGlass bench thread & JDA1975's Skeeter build progress. YouTube has great vids too. If you can use a jigsaw, you can probably sew new cushion covers for less then 1/3 what a shop will charge. And be able to do repairs as needed. Some shops will let you buy material, but may charge you extra on labor, they'll be loosing a percentage of profit on the sale of the vinyl.

Re: Re-upholster a boat

I replaced the flooring on my own so I think I can do some upholstery work too. I was going to sell the boat and wasn't sure if redoing the interior would be worth it. It's a 93 Marada 2100. I repowered with a 5.0 Mercruiser a few years ago and the engine has less than 20 hours on it so far. The mechanics and hydraulics are in great shape so the whole problem is cosmetic. Do you think the boat would be worth over 5K if I do the interior??

Can't help w/ that. But I doubt you'd get your money back if you pay to have the upholstery done. But spend $2500 on upholstery & get an extra $XX when you sell it. I think it certainly would make it easier to sell.

But $5K, I have no idea. Sorry,

Re: Re-upholster a boat

agree with jb
you did the floor, you should be able to handle the interior.

i'm bettin if you take each panel off seperately
it will look much easier to complete
if you went with solid panel coverings instead of multi with piping would make it even easier

even iff you took the vinyl off the panel and bought the colors u want(jo ann fabrics i believe 20 a yard)
i bet you could get an upohlstry shop to sew the pattern much cheaper
(i think i know someone who can help with the sewing. pm me for more info)
then you could reinstall it to the panels and mount them to save some cash

my advice, pull 1 panel and see how it was originally done
post pics i'm sure all will help guide you

buff n an interior you shouldn't have problems
especially if you get it done before july:D
hope this helps

I did the rear seat and sun pad on my Formula. The stitching was a bit tricky, but it came out OK. To do it again, I would probably take more time to get the details better.

Above is a link to my projects page which shows the end results.

Your boat needs a lot of upholstery work, so maybe a local automotive upholstery shop would be better, unless you feel up to the task.

Re: Re-upholster a boat

Tommy,

I just went thru the reupholster of my bow-rider and definitely think the interior is something you could tackle. I didn't need my helm seats reupholstered as I was ordering new, updated seats from a supplier, but needed new bow seats, back rest, trim, rear bench seat and associated pads. (link below) These were the options I was contemplating...

Option #1. Hire a local marine/auto upholsterer to tackle the whole project...$1,500.00
Option #2. Take out old interior myself and hire an upholsterer off CL to recover everything except helm seats...$800.00
Option #2a. Cut all new patterns and hire someone of CL or from local Jo Ann fabrics to sew it up...$unsure as I never made the call to the seamstress?
Option #3. Purchase my own vinyl and cut out my own patterns, have buddies wife sew everything up...$300.00
Option #3a. Option #3 above, but I borrowed a sewing machine from a friend and sewed everything up myself as my buddy's wife realized the time required to accomplish...$300.00

WOG's upholstery videos/pictures are great, mrdjflores's link listed in post is awesome. JDA's upholstery job is also awesome...between the 3 of them, you'd be covered as a basis to get started and advice along the way. I used all my old vinyl as patterns (mostly and only as the overall size...I wanted to simplify my look; therefore, I eliminated all the piping).

Good Luck!
