Great forum,
Frisco I have watched your series any number of times and it is very helpful. Just picked up the Sportcraft and began assessing the problems; Totally waterlogged transom, stringers, bukheads etc. Began removing out floor in sections. I want to know if after all the repair work is done can i reinstall the removed floor/salvage it. It is in perfect condition, ply is solid and glass is securely attached.
Thanks for your help and suggestions

Is it just me... or are those pics tiny? Could you please use a larger image?

You could reuse your decking, but you'll either have to sand or grind back to good glass and lay more glass on top to cover your screw holes and tab the decking back to the hull.

Having gone as far as you have, I'd install new decking just to be absolutely sure nothing I fixed was going to fail any time soon and to have everything new.

welcome to iBoats!!!!
first off, please read Don's sticky thread at the beginning of the resto forum....it contains information on putting your photos up on photo bucket and then pasting the codes into your thread....

as Jig said...since your are replacing eveything else, i'd install new decking as well.

The cost of new decking will be approx $300 dollars in Wood and Fiberglass materials. I agree with what others have said. Since you're already there why not. Having said that, IF money is and issue and IF you're 100% certain the old deck is totally sound, then you could save $200+ dollars by reusing it. I guess it all boils down to what you're comfortable with. Your boat...your decision!!!;)

Re: Re-using/installing removed glass deck 1983 sportcraft 222

Hey that one worked this time.
Anyway thanks for your responses. The deck pcs I cut out are in great shape. The boat is made as a hull then the cap placed on it. The hull and cap had partial height stringers on ea so when the were attached ea. mated to the others stringers.
Then a resin was applied to join, then a peanut butter between underside of deck and top of stringers. No screwws. Eack pc. pull up easily, very few pcs were tabbed to deck.
Was looking for suggestiions to re-attach pcs. of decking after other work is done. So far deck is removed, cockpit and then I'm going into cuddy. There are alot of molds, steps, wells, hatches and hatch lids. So that is primarily why I wanted to work the pcs. back in after total rewood/glass for transom, stringers, bulkheads etc.

I intend to cut back @ 1" on each pc. going back, secure a resined ply/lip to underside then mate it to the other component. That will leave me @ 2" open to add wood block, glass/resin to match up and beef it up.

Any ideas are apppreciated. Got some time on my hands whereas I just had some surgery on my knee.
More pics {I hope}

Re: Re-using/installing removed glass deck 1983 sportcraft 222

hmm,
Thought I might haved some reponses other than just re-deck the deck. I have looked high and low but no-one says to do what I am suggesting or that it is wrong.
There is no thread on re-installing a completely good removed deck, ply, gel coat. The response would be "install a new deck" but I think that is not the answer. Nor is it a $$ question. The question is how to re-install a perfectly good deck that came out, the whole thing, wood, glass and gel. After I totally replace all the mess below the deck.
BTW I have no interest in screwing down the deck......leaks leaks leaks...

I think you've gotten about as much of a recommendation as you're likely to get around the iboats dry dock, from WoodOnGlass, for the reasons he's listed and as he's said: it's your money & it's your boat.

There are too many variables to remotely, via limited pix, limited size pix, and limited quality pix over the internet to say Yes. It sounds like you've gotten quite a few No responses.

If you can't find any info about the method of re-cycling your deck you want to attempt, does that mean it's not advisable or that no one has ever done it... Maybe it's never been done because it's not advisable.

There may be more then 1 way to re-deck a boat, but there are HUNDREDs of incorrect ways of re-decking a boat.

Looks like you have to decide for yourself where, in that spectrum of re-decking a boat, your method falls.

I, too, will advise against recycling the deck material. Partially for all the previous stated reasons in earlier responses, and also because there is essentially no way you can easily & fully assess a plywood deck that is still wrapped in fiberglass. The pix you've posted of the below deck mess (your description) indicate that there was quite a bit of moisture & rot below deck.

There is a difference between being a bottom feeder (rebuilding a boat inexpensively) and making reckless decisions & potentially costly mistakes.

But you are certainly able to proceed however you see fit as all of that ^^^ is just IMHO.

Boat safely

I got to say...the information here is outstanding to say the least. I'm still working the boat and have really relied on alot of you guys expertise. During my learning curve there were/are alot of things to digest. I have really enjoyed learning and applying this information in a proper way to make the boat, safe, better than the mfg and has become apart of my everyday research/anticipation to finish properly.
In simple response to: Get bit! "Bottom Feeder?" Is just my IMHO........great support there bud.

Re: Re-using/installing removed glass deck 1983 sportcraft 222

Ayuh,.... I've seen hulls built like yer's,... I've so far avoided doin' serious work on 'em,....

Best I can tell, Yer plan sounds pretty solid,....
Build each piece, 'n glue 'em together, pretty much like it was done the 1st time,...
Tabs, 'n peanut butter,... build in lips, 'n bridges, wherever needed,...

I imagine the top castin', 'n the hull castin' fit like a jigsaw puzzle piece,..??
Ya just gotta figure out where the contact points align, 'n where to put the glue,...

--Hey and Hi Bondo,
You are exactly right. Everything is stick and glue. I have alot of small areas in front cuddy and alot open in rear where I ripped out the floor and transom. Transom is back in, looks great...well at least to me.
All wood and I mean all wood was rotted. Everytime I said, hmm cool I go with it my gut kept saying check out the next pc. Sure enough rot was alot!
Lots of peanut butter, tabs etc. Set the boat up very well with pvc hoops, heater etc for winter work. I can get her from 30 deg. to 75 deg. in about 15 minutes. Yapped with some guys from "Composite" and they recommended a quick set epoxy for the work as long as temps are good and all areas are equally heated. Ie; the hull for stringers and bulkheads.
Have a Great Holiday!
I'll shoot out some new pics after I download from phone and old camera.
