Re: reading a flasher

Is this an old style flasher or a newer marcum or velexar?

If it was me I would wrap it in a newspaper then put it in a garbage bag and sneek it in the garbage can.

Really to read it, look at a big flash for the bottom any marks above the bottom are brush, fish, air bubble or anything. As you change the depth setting the scale will change and the flasher will slow down if deeper or make a second revolution. You have to be looking right at the unit to see any fish or bottom. There is no history of what you went over.

In my opinion the cheapest LCD no mater what brand is better. I would not drill a hole to mount the transducer but then that is just me.

For ice fishing flashers are the way to go. Unfortunatly they have come a long way since 1990. A new velexar FL-18 goes for about 400 dollars and they will actually show wiggle on your wax worm. They have multicolor displays that show fish surrounding the bait and also show when a fish is going after the lure in real time. I agree with Boatist though on the LCD units compared to the older flashers. You constantly have to keep adjusting the gain and you dont know if the flat spots are thermoclines, weeds bait fish or large fish. I boats sells a ton of good fish finders for under 200 dollars. Good luck.

My Eagle Fishmark 320 display has a column to the right of the graph that functions just like a flasher, showing sonar returns in real-time. The Eagle Electronics website has emulators you can download at www.eaglegps.com/Downloads/Emulators/default.htm

At least it gives you a chance to see a graph image and the flasher simultaneously.

Hope this helps.
