I am buying a 2011 Regal from my old man. What is the cheapest and easiest way to read codes as we got limp home mode and CEL? I was looking into an Easy Connect tool, but the closest dealer, which is a couple hours away is unsure if it is compatible with my motor.

You have a 555 ECM and Cheapest would be the Rinda Techmate Pro with adapter 94029 or Diacom software with same adapter

Diacom kit 94030c $699
Techmate Pro 94729 $589

There are several kits with different adapters. The Techmate is a 3 line handheld tool which is easy to use but doesn't give all info on one screen and not able to record test

Diacom uses your laptop and displays a lot of info at once and can records data for review later

Just wondering why did you get information about the ECM? When I look up 555 ECM, I see a lot of mention to Mercrusier. It feels like Volvo Penta has more varations in their engines than Mercrusier did. Is there a source that can help validate what the Dealer said about it not being compatible with Easy Connect? My SN for my engine is A137034.

Easy connect will give you motor info but not necessarily codes, nor can it clear them
Hey @QBhoy you can fill in further

Sorry, I meant "where", not "why" ><.

I read the Easy Connect could read codes, I guess maybe that is limited depending on the engine.

Not sure I can, if it’s a VP. Not up to date with the software they use to be honest. But yeah…if it’s a GXi engine, the ecu is the same as the mercruiser as far as I know. But depends which motor. I think the 5.7 and 6.2 have variations from the 5.0 for example. Or vary amongst each of them even. Some even have different rpm ranges too from their ecu. Some are 4600-5000 and some will go to 5200 I think.
What specific engine is this ?

So the easy connect, I presume, can perform the same functions as the mercruiser equivalent vessel view software.
This means that you can read any faults that may show up and also clear most of them too, as far as I know.
Regarding the logistics around installing it…I am not too well versed on. But you’d assume it would be as easy as the mercruiser system. Just a case of plugging it into the terminated plug on the side of the engine…then it transmits Bluetooth data to you phone or tablet.
Here is a link you may find useful

Does that have a flat cap distributor on it ? I’m not too up on the VP variants. It had a very low power output by the looks of it. Does she have 8 injectors and a fuel rail or is it single point throttle body injected

Looking at the image of the distributor, it looks pretty flat to me: https://www.volvopenta.com/shop/999222/part-sections/54158792

It is rated for 300HP, I don't know why it shows 224hp on the above document.

Looking at this document that is linked to my Engine, it looks like it has 8 injectors, would this make it MPI? For some reason I assumed this was TBI: https://www.volvopenta.com/shop/999222/part-sections/54158767

8 injectors and fuel rail each side makes it an mpi yeah. Flat cap will confirm that too. Should be a 555 I’d think.

Does the 555 refer to Intergrated Circuit inside the ECM? With all these different versions, it makes it a PITA to figure out what is what.

The 555 deals with which ECM (computer) is installed
Old MEFI 1, 2, 3, 4
Newer 555
PCM 09
PCM 112 current

If it is indeed a 555, can I buy and use the Easy Connect with it? I assume I can take photos to confirm it is the 555 or not.

I’d think so. Have a look further into it. Or contact them perhaps
You think dealers would be a little more helpful. One said he didn't think it was compatible and the other has yet to reply.

I got the boat delivered this morning. On the ECM it does say 3847942. Googling that PN, I see a module that has two 45pin connectors with 15pins/row. I also see a plug that isn't connected to anything other than some type of water proof protector. The plug is 8pin, but only has 6 pins populated.
