Ok guys i really need some input here. I purchased a boat last week and i have some questions and need some help. First of all, Its a 89 Carrera I/O with a 5.7 chevy all stock and a MercCruiser Alpha One outboard. I took it out today for the first time and found she was taking on some water. After looking at it i found that the Bellow is cracked and that is where the water is coming in. I took it to the local boat shop and he asked about a "groaning" noise. After i told him i also herd this he informed me that i needed a "Gimble" bearing installed at that this was not something i could do myself. Does anyone here have any exp with working on these outboards? Also, does anyone have a PDF of the service manual on these Outdrives?

This is the prop. forum, and you'll probably get a better answer if this was posted to the outdrive forum. Perhaps the moderator will move it for you.
Anyway, this is a rather involved procedure- replacing the gimble bearing.
You need quite a few specialized (and not inexpensive) tools, the correct service manual for your outdrive, and of course, the correct parts.
I'm guessing that you don't have a lot of mechanical experience, and if that's the case, I'd suggest you leave this one to the pros.
In addition to your gimble bearing, you should replace the bellows, possibly more, depending on what an inspection would indicate.
Be prepared to spend a few bucks on this at a good boat service shop.
You can download a PDF of the correct service manual for your outdrive by searching on the forum. Reading about the job would let you know what you're in for if you decide to DIY.

Thanks for the input. I am an experienced mechanic just the whole new outdrive portion is new to me. I have built several engines and what not. I assumed when he told me that i could not do the gimble bearing that was because of needed special tools. I was also just unsure of how complicated the inner workings of the ourdrive was.
