We have all done some stupid thing before, but something I did this weekend really has to rank in the top 2 or 3 of stupid things that I have ever done.
While raking leaves out of my yard, I decided to pile them leaves up, and burn a small pile of 'em. (I have many trees in my yard, and it usually takes me a week to rake the whole yard). After piling the leaves up, I thought, "Half of these leaves are wet, so i'm gonna need something to help get this fire goin". So, I went to the shed, and pulled out a very small amount of gasoline. I poured a very small amount on the pile, and attempted to light it. Well guess what, instead of lighting a fire, it ignited, and blew up like a bomb! It literally knocked me on my rear. Scared the living crap outta me. There wasn't much wind, so I think that the fumes also ignited when I tried to light the pile.

I learned somethin that day, ............I learned that I ain't too smart. :p

So I guess the moral of the story is; "Don't burn leaves if you got gas"! :D

Carpy, if leaves won't start on their own, don't put gas on them.
They might blow up in your face and knock you on your butt. :p

oh my, this story is just what I needed.

You said a "very small amount"? I have a complete boat full of it leaking dunno where or why!!!

Your experiment with the leaves reminded my question on this forum "can I reconnect the battery to check the fuel tank level?".... oh my.

Yeah, that will happen. In case you were wondering why:

When you pour gasoline on wood, and ignite it, you ignite the SURFACE of the wood, because you also need air for combustion and there isn't much air trapped inside solid wood.

However, when you pour gasoline on leaves, there is lots of air trapped within a pile of leaves, so it doesn't just ignite the surface. It ignites THROUGHOUT the entire pile. Hence, the boom, and lack of eyebrows... :)

Gas Doesn't burn. This is your Lesson.

Gas evaperates and burns at a VERY high rate, Explosive rates if enclosed...

Leaves are enough of a "container" to keep the fumes together to cause an explosion.

Use something less volitile :) Diesel / Kerosene are GREAT fire starters.....

Lit my burn pile behind the house this winter... 5 gallons of diesel, toss a lit road flare and stand back! (100' Flames easily...... but it took almost a minute to slowly get to that point )

The previous year, I lit this pile, I used 5 gallons of used 2 Cycle GAS my brother had that had turned bad in his boat... That was fun!

.....But I lit this with a 40' Time delay fuse used for fireworks.

the gas burned up so quick, the fire never really got going. But it was cool to watch

There is seared carp on the menu!!!!!!I pumped gas my first job and a car came in with a frozen locking gas cap, well the moron proceded to put his cig lighter on the key slot of the gas cap to defrost it.I screamed at him to stop.He stopped and turned to me and said when he was in the army he had gas so cold that he put a match out in it.That was almost 30 years ago andI will never forget this azhole and his moronic statement.Your incident was genious compared to this.Charlie

I once had my leaf pile burning so well that I set the lower branches on the nearby trees on fire.
Now I've come to accept that leaves make good compost and keep the weeds down. At least that's what I tell my wife. ;)

Carpy,

What are we going to do with you?

How many times have I told you not to fart while lighting leaves with gasoline on them!!

It was all that methane you were producing that caused the explosion.

Your just lucky that the fire didn't seek out the source of the methane! :D

One thing you should always remember, don't eat beans the night before you rake and burn leaves!!! :D

Now on the serious side, are you OK?

Didn't get burnt or anything?

I hope not.

Man, isn't amazing how many stupid things we do in our lives and get away with them!!

Simply amazing!

Glad your alright.

Later.

Gosh...I hope your neighbors didn’t see you, Carpie! Worst thing in the whole world…lookin’ up with your eyebrows still smoldering and see the neighbors staring back at you with that blank, dumbfounded expression.

Carpy, glad you weren't hurt! A few years ago went to a friends house, we were gonna have a bon fire, roast wienies, etc. Got there, and he was no where to be found - for a while. He had used gas and was blown clean away from the fire circle. Had 2nd and 3rd degree burns over a large portion of his body, off work for several months. It wasn't a pretty sight. And he just used a little gas also!

Re: Really, Really, Really, Stupid

sorry carpy - rotflmao :D

i watched a guy standing too close to an ant bed pour gas in it, throw in a match, and then watch it blow up. after a few seconds he starts running around like a wildman because the clumps of dirt that landed on him still had some lively fire ants attached :D
