My 62 Land Rover rear axle housing has rusted through again. Last year I did a welding repair (not real pretty), it didn't leak and held up for a while. Now it has rusted out again.

Looking for the some good advise on how to get a long term repair on this.

Here are some pics of it, not the best but it gives an idea of the mess. This is on the drivers side between the spring and the hub.

Smoke, Thanks for the link. I didn't know that this was possible.

I have done some looking for a new / used axle housing. Haven't seen a match for mine, but similar ones are very expensive.

Not pleasant news, but it is an option.

is this rig a resto, daily driver, or wheeler? what's the lug bolt pattern?

I agree with Smokeonthewater, If you plan on doing a full restoration, put an original back in. If not, you can get a modern housing fully assembled, and shipped to ur door ready to bolt in. The advantage to a new modern axle is it will be stronger, cheaper to upgrade, and it WILL outlast the vehicle. You will never have to worry about rusting through either. If you call currie, they will ask a couple simple questions like year, HP, driving intentions, oem or newer ect.

If cash is tight???? You can always take the axle down to a machine shop, and have them fab up new tubes N backing plate flanges. One thing to watch, is to pay attention to the way the diff. is taken apart. For obvious reasons, the axles will have to come out, and to get those out, the diff. has to be taken apart. The diff. has to be reassembled EXACTLY the same way it was taken apart. If the carrier shims, and bearing caps are not put back in the way they were taken out the ring N pinion gears will go out in no time complete with a howling noise that will be easy enough for a deaf person to hear. Just my .02 pesos

Re: Rear axle housing repair advise

Thanks for all the input.

This is a Series IIA 88", I have had it for 18 years. It is a toy that I fix as needed. Over the years I have replaced a lot of body parts, deer hits and misc bumps. It has a new Turner engine, I rebuilt the trans, reupholstered the interior and I have done some repairs to the frame, lots of brake and clutch work and you have to love Lucas electronics.

I basically fix what it needs when it needs it. I use it for fun and bouncing around trout fishing and hunting. I don't go crazy on 4 wheeling or rock climbing.

As it is a toy I try not to spend a fortune on it, from what I've seen a replacement axle will be well over a grand plus shipping.

I have looked a fair amount on CL but don't see much if anything. I have seen a ton of Discovery axles and wonder if they would match up. I have the original riveted steel rims, 5 lug. It also has an offset diff in the axle.

Bond-o - I knew there was something I liked about you, even though I'm a tinny. :D Yours sounds like a nice set up, love diesels.

You should see if you can slap a Ford 8.8 or something onto it. Try ebay or somewhere for a used replacement axle, maybe? That axle isn't even scrap worthy

I see by your profile your in southwest Michigan.
Call Lane Automotive in Watervliet (269) 463-8136 or 1-800-772-5266 and ask for Brent A.
He will know where to steer you as far as a local fab shop that has experience with axle housing repairs or replacements.
Tell him "jeeperman" sent ya and he will be surprised.
