Did you install the inner transom shield? (Item #1 below) It has the steering attachment on it also.

Thanks Don S...No I have not..This drawing makes sense now to me..(Everything on garage floor)was hard to remember/find it....I guess that item 10 is what you use to mount rear of engine to..Are the rear mounts crucial to drive alignment or just the fronts?...Thanks,Pete44

Extreamly crucial!
And all the hardware that goes with them. 1 piece missing and you will not get it aligned.
You REALLY, REALLY need a Merc service manual for both the engine and drive if you are going to get that job done so it works right.

Here is a link to the service manual for your drive.
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf

Here is one for a 3.0L, however, it's for a newer model, but will still help you.
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/13/13covr2.pdf

Re: rear engine mounts (where???)

Thanks again Don...I will get an estimate from my marine mechanic on putting everything back in(he was going to align my drive anyway)..If he is too steep on price I'll put everything back in and let him align it.Would you know a rough price for him to do it?...Would it be better to let him do it all? I took everything out and took the time to label connections/hoses etc.I do have a Clymer manual (people in here dont like them)...Thanks again for your info...Pete44

Re: rear engine mounts (where???)

Since all you have is the Clumsy, errrr, Clymers manual and you have already left the inner transom shield off, I would suggest you let the marine mechanic put MOST of it back in.
At least the transom shield, exhaust Y, steering, trim hoses etc. that needs to be done before installing the engine, then set the engine in and align it. At that point, you could install the rest of the stuff.
Not being able to see what is going on, I could only guess at maybe 4 to 8 hours for the above. But don't try to hold a mechanic that can see what has to be done to my estimates.

Re: rear engine mounts (where???)

hehehe..pretty good on the Clumsy part,,,I'll get him to look at it first...he said $100 to install/align drive..(1 hour)..If we made that kind of dollar we would be spending more time driving them than fixing them :D ....of course we all know BOAT stands for (Bring On Another Thousand)which to some of us $100 seems like a $1000.. ..Heres the old girl when she was together. Thanks again,Pete44
