Re: rear motor mounts

It seems to me they changed them over when they went to the R/MR/Alpha drives. I just put a 228 in my 83, and it had about the last year of the Type 1 drive. The difference is in the width of the mounts, for starters. The old style inner transom assembly/flywheel housing mounting points are about 2 inches wider where they bolt together. Also as previously mentioned the double wound lockwasher was eliminated altogether. The 228 I bought had an Alpha (later) set up on it, so I swapped on the flywheel housing from my old 898 onto the 228, using the lockwashers and fiber washers. Bolted together like it was supposed to be there in the first place. Hope this helps, too!
