Have a 1994 Johnson 175 Ocean Runner. Currently in the shop due to water in lower unit and shift / throttle issues. The guys took it apart and found the following: Corrosion on shift shaft ( replace ), control cables bent / binding ( replace ) shift interrupter switch ( replace ), throttle linkage busted ( fix / replace ) , gearcase reseal, water pump, etc. Repair figures out to about $550 in parts and 11hrs of labor x $125 /hr = $1375 total - about $2,000. Understanding I am paying peak rates this time of year and don't have many options. The 11hrs of labor is whats got me stumped.Anyone out there who has ran a shop think that's a reasonable amount of labor for this repair?

Acronym for boat.= Break, out, another, thousand! 11hrs is a bit much, however this is where any repair shop of any kind make there $$$$$$$. I know for a fact that a lot of repair shops and not just boat repair, double there estimated work hours. It pays to do your homework as your about to find out!
Just for sh*ts and giggles, acronym for RV. = Rich Victim! Good luck.

The majority of shops use base hour rates. Much like automotive repair shops do. If the book tells them this job should take 4 hours to do this 2, hours to do that, and 5 hours to do the other job. Well you get charged for 11 hours. If the mechanic only took 8 well... you get chaged for 11. If it took him 14 you should still get charged 11.

Or it should take you 5.5 estimated labor hrs. But we need to make money so 11hrs ought to cover it! Seen this to many times!! Sorry if the truth hurts you in the pocket book.
