After installing a new water pump and impeller, I'm having a tough time getting the shift, shaft, and cooling system to line up so that I can re-attach the lower unit. Any suggestions? Thanks

Re: Reassembly of 5 HP Yamaha Lower Unit

Yeah, I just finished the same project on my 91 4hp Yamaha. Here's what helped...I have the service manual and it said to put the gear shifter (on the motor) into reverse and push the shift rod (lower unit) down to engage the reverse gear.

I slid the prop back on the shaft so that when the drive shaft met the power head, I could rotate the prop easily to get the teeth to line up.

Also, I had to hold the lower unit at the base by the water pump as I slid it up the motor. With one set of fingertips I could guide the water tube onto the water pump rubber thing, and with the other hand, I made sure the collar for the shift lever didn't get pushed up out of reach.

Once those two were mated properly, I focused on rotating the prop to get the shaft teeth to line up with the power head.

The biggest setback I kept encountering was the shift rod kept popping out of reverse, AND getting the shift rodtip to line up with the little hole at the top of the housing.

Other than that...take deep breaths.
