Don't know why but I seem to have a hole in my head when it comes to rebuilding carbs. I have a 1988, 5.7l with an alpha one making bout 260hp.

1) Big bucks to rebuild?

2) Upgrade to one of the units in the Summitt racing site? And if so what CFM? What brand is recommended.

3) Am I just brainlocked or is this a little more tricky than meets they eye?

Thanks in advance..

Re: rebuild a carb.

rebuilding carbs is not that hard...depends on what kind of carb it is..Rochesters are a little trickier...and a carb kit is around 20-40 bucks. If carb is old and you want a new carb...Edelbrock makes a great marine carb; i installed one on my '82 305 5.0l and was perfect right out of the box, no adjustments needed. I bought it from jegs.com for @$280...it's a 600cfm...but make sure it's a marine carb and consult a manual for cfm; a 5.7 made need a 750cfm

Nope.... Too Big....
Go with the 600/650.......
Higher Velocity promotes Torque.....
And We All Know, Torque moves the Boat......

I've Never had a lot of Luck with the Rottenchesters........
The Merc./Weber is the Same carb as the Edlebrock...... And I Love them...... ;)

Re: rebuild a carb.

More than likely a rottenchester quadrajet.(Two very large secondary barrels). Yes there are probably better carbs out there, but these work pretty darn well. The rebuild is pretty simple. Make sure if you rebuild, replace float and needle and seat. Also set float adjust for your carbs specs. Good luck

My first question is WHY the rebuild? Rebuilding carbs is not too hard but many times they are not necessary.

Describe your current carb problem and it may save you time and $$$ many times marine carbs are just in need of a new accelorator pump or just a simple cleaning of the choke circuit.

Bob

Go to marinemechanic.com
In carburetor section, they will
show you, step by step with pictures.
how to rebuild any brand of marine
carb.
This is the best marine site on the
internet. They sell nothing - just
a vast amount of free information.

Bob-VT,

You may be right, when you go to put her up on plane and you punch her, it bogs down for a second or two then takes off. (Accelorator Pump) And this year she is a little difficult to start, even when warmed up, you have to pump the trottle pretty far to get her to catch and go. (Choke curcuit?) Based on this I felt it was time to do a rebuild but as you can tell by my questions, I am in uncharted waters for myself.

Re: rebuild a carb.

Yeah, sounds like common problems. The accelorator pump (plunger) tends to shrink and wear. Unlike an automobile a boat requires quite a LARGE shot of gas when taking off... when that wears it bogs the boat.

Hunt around and try to find a rebuild kit but I doubt you will need all the parts... I would concentrate on the accel pump first. Sadly it is near immpossible just to buy that part of the kit that you need.

Get your carb part #'s and hit your local NAPA or other parts store.

Bob

Does $90.00 complete, sound like a reasonable price to have a 4 barrel Rochester rebuilt. Or is this too good to be true?
