i have a 85 Montauk...It has a 70 hp Johnson that is showing its age.I want to re power to a 90 or 100 hp but do not want to buy new.I am looking for a motor i can rebuild myself from pretty much bottom up.I do have the nohow and the tools to do all but the machine work.My question is this! Is there a model and year that would be my best candidate for a rebuild ( 2 strokes only)???Thanks for any input......Gordy

I would look for a good used outboard with good compression that doesn't need a complete rebuild. Maybe any OMC 90hp-115hp 2-stroke from the 1990's. If you're patient, sometimes you can find one cheap that has a bad powerpack or dirty carb and still has good compression for cheap.

Yea, right now, with the sucky economy and the high price of gas, the bigger motors are pretty inexpensive. You won't have any trouble finding a good motor for a good price.

Great boat.

A V-4 (88, 90, 112, 115 HP's) will turn it into a rocket. I would go with an 88 or 90 since your boat is rated for 100.

Used V-4's are easy to find and are not that expensive. I see rebuilt ones, with warranty, on eBay from time to time.

More than likely, your controls will just plug in.

Agree- I bought a '87 110 Johnson 3 yrs ago & the only thing i've HAD to do to it was replace the electric primer selonoid :)
