Re: Rebuild Complete!

OK Here a hot rod trick to finding TDC even more accurate than factory. Do some searching on the web for degreeing a cam and read how to get TDC to get the total picture, but I will explain it briefly.

Remove all spark plugs. Get something fixed to the engine near the balancer that acts as a pointer/timing tab an angled piece of metal clotheshanger bolted to the timing cover sometimes works. Get a spark plug for your engine, knock out the porcelin, thread the spark plug to accept a long bolt. Put the threaded spark plug, without the bolt, into #1 cylinder. Put thumb over spark plug hole and bump engine until its near TDC. thread the bolt in until it touches the piston top. put a mark on the balancer where the wire pointer ends up. Don't touch bolt. Now rotate the engine backwards with a wrench slowly until it hits the bolt. Mark balancer again. Divide the psace between the two marks in half, mark that. That center mark is now the TDC mark! use a punch to make it permanant. Sounds hard but isn't. At least try it and see how it works with your timing by ear.

Re: Rebuild Complete!

boring and stroking does NOT change the mechanical relatation between crank and camshaft - ive been working on car engines for 25 years, and my 302 Ford is 30 over, timing stayed the same ... now, yes, there is a difference between a car engine that loafs along at 2500 and the dynamic loading of a boat engine that is constantly under load (no hills to coast down) and cranking along at 3500 - 4500 RPM - but the factory knows this and they time them accordingly

finger over #1 hole. bump the starter (yank coil wire) when it pops off you are right around top dead center, look in hole to see if the piston is there, pencil in the hole, breaker bar on the harmonic balancer nut to get her right on top

no problem
