Rebuild or replace - raw water pump

So I pulled my raw water pump (apparently neither Searay nor Mercruiser have even remotely considered serviceability...) and it looks a little worse for wear. Since I'm missing chunks of metal from the housing, should I replace it or can the broken part be found as a spare?

And what pump is this? I can see the numbers 8763 but the rest of them (1 or 2) are corroded.

Many thanks.

Ayuh,... Personally, I'd replace the whole thing...

What's the serial number of yer motor,..??

The numbers you see, aren't part numbers, but some casting numbers...

If the front section of the pump is ok, no leaks and the bearing is smooth, you can replace the housing and impeller with the newer plastic body and impeller kit. OEM PN 46-807151A14 or aftermarket http://www.iboats.com/Water-Pump-Ki...2611441--session_id.090611799--view_id.172770

Judging by the picture of the kit the housing seems lower, suggesting a "shorter" pump with lesser capacity. Or am I being tricked by the picture?

Just the picture, same impeller.

Just a hint, instead of people asking what engine and drive, etc. you have, might want to copy and paste this into your signature. Then it's always there when you need it.

Engine 1991 5.7L Thunderbolt IV 0D522668
Closed Cooling, (full, with engine mounted raw water pump)
Drive Alpha I Gen II, Ratio 1.50 0D528065

Good idea!

This is what the impeller looks like - time for a replace!!Luckily I haven't over heated the engine.

The axle/bearings feel fine which is good news.

Yup.... That impeller has seen better days...... Lucky you caught it before it launched the fins into the cooling system. If going with the plastic ones again, personally, would use the Merc OEM plastic pump body when replacing. I have had 2 aftermarket plasic bodies crack on me. I am replacing with a Hardin Marine stainless steel one this winter, which will eliminate that problem all together.

Looks like your pump certainly is rebuildable: http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/M...1988-1993/0B788197_0F024999/SEAWATER PUMP.pdf

As Don said, it the bearings / seals are good, just replace the pump housing and impeller and she'll be like new. This year, I rebuilt my raw water pump drive assy w/ new bearings and seals (mine is an older one w/ the fuel pump on it too and was 650 for new one). Hardest part was the R&R of the pulley. Otherwise it was a piece of cake.
