I have a 1977 starcraft as 16' ...and the transom is junk...i have a sheet of 23/32 really good plywood ...can I double it up and cover it with fiberglass and paint it ...or should I get true 3/4 plywood and go a separate route ...if so what should I do ...my local home Depot does not have epoxy in large containers ...just the little syringe type stuff

Fiberglass starcraft or aluminum

If aluminum, 2 layers of 3/4 exterior ply laminated with tite bond III and coated with old-timers formula

If its a fiberglass boat, use real fiberglass cloth and resin from a fiberglass shop. Not only is it so much cheaper than the junk at big box stores, its not junk

It is an aluminum boat....what do you mean by exterior plywood....are you referring to pressure treated ...if so I've heard that it is bad to use it on an aluminum boat because of the reaction between metals

Exterior rated plywood is NOT the same as pressure treated.

Perhaps you could describe what the "really good" 23/32 plywood you already have is....

If it isnt exterior rated, it isnt made w waterproof glue.

You need exterior sheathing ( NOT OSB ). Will be labled as 2 variable letters and an X.. AAX is actually marine grade for instance but you won't find it in the lumber yard. Get the closest letters to A in the alphabet that you can get. CDX is very common and cheap and will work fine for a transom.

Some interior plywoods are also glued with exterior rated glue, but do not use them.

Old Timer's Formula is actually Wood On Glass's formula and I think it is in one of the stickies at the top of the forums. So I would suggest you take the time and read them for a very informative read about what you are about to do. It explains everything it detail...

The Sticky's are at the top of the forum for restorations, so look there under restoration forums...

yes, however if you paint the wood with oil-based, no need to seal it with old-timers formula. the oil base does that.
