hi, i have to remove my floor and redo the whol ething, stringers and all... heres my question... can i rebiuld the transom , thigger and stronger to accept the weight of an older heavy motor.. the motor i have is about 50 lbs more than the stock motor.. i mean i have to replace and rebuild the transom anyways, is it possible to just make it really thick with multiple layers of wood, glass, wood, glass, wood, glass. etc..... thanks guys

mike

phatmanmike@yahoo.com

Re: rebuild transom...

keep in mind the weight your going to add in extra motor and extra transom will affect how the boat sits. can cause some unforseen issues, including sinking..

and yes, there are ways to strengthen transoms beyond stock... keep in mind too, max hp rating for hulls is not just a function of how much motor the transom will hold...

Without a Clue as to What boat this is...........

Just Restoring the transom to Original Strength,
Would Probably be Plenty of support for your Larger motor......
I'd be more inclined to add Knee-Braces,
Rather than making the transom Thicker.......
2"s thick is about the most you can go,
And still Clamp the motor On.....

You might think about transom plates rather than a heavier transom (a lot less weight) unless you have a 85hp on a johnboat with a 1" transom, thats a scary thought. :D :D

Re: rebuild transom...

sorry, its a 1960 glasspar citation 16 foot runabout, they built these things pretty thin, and i have to pull up the floor and stringers anyway, so i figured while i was in there to rebuild the transom so hold the extra weight.. beam is 79.5 inches and 20 inches tall... came stock ith a merc 50hp but the largest option was the 80 i believe , maybe the 85, it is a ski boat and you used to be able to pull 2, sometimes 3 skiers with these old things..

if i use two seperate layers of 3/4 inch ply, each one wrapped in resin and mat and then resin and matted together... thats seems like it would be a brick wall.. ive seen others do it this way and it was like steel...

mikey
