rebuild vs. Replace primer solenoid

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2000 Johnson 50 hp and the Primer Solenoid seems to have gone bad. (No reaction when key is press), cleaned the connections, and then connected it via some jumper wires direct to the battery and it did nothing. When I open the red Valve I can pump (with the primer bulb) gas through the hoses to the carbs. If you think I am doing something wrong or skipping a step please let me know.

If not can someone advise me if it is better to just purchase a new Primer Solenoid or if I should try to rebuild it?

Thanks

Regards

Harry

It does nothing when connected directly to the battery, you feel nothing and hear nothing ? Then almost certainly the solenoid coil is open circuited.

But before ordering the new solenoid just confirm the above by checking with an ohms meter.

Will, do read the manual and it said the meter should read 4-7

Harry ,buy a used one if your coil is shot,EBAY is my favorite place for used, unless you got a guy nearby with a bunch of old motors lying around, like I do

Alright, I put a a meter on the PS, and it registered .5 OHMS so I would say that I (with your guy's help) narrowed it down to the PS. I am going to try to source the best place/price.

Thanks for everyone's help I am going to check ebay and craigslist, if anyone has any other thoughts I am up for suggestions.

Happy 4th to everyone God Bless America

Re: rebuild vs. Replace primer solenoid

Hmmm
I expected you to either get a normal reading ... indicating that it was OK or more likley infinity, indicating that it was open circuited.

0.5 ohms indicates a partial short circuit .!!

Anyway to repair a partial s/c or should I just bite the bullet and replace the PS.

Thanks

0.5 Ohms is a bit strange.
Did you zero the meter by shorting the leads and adjusting the zero point?
Could you have been on the wrong scale?
(5 Ohms would be in the happy zone)

Alright, I'm a dumb-***, I had the scale set on the 10X omhs, once I realized it I changed the scale to the 1x and re-zeroed it, and now it has a 0 omhs.

Sorry for the rookie mistake.

It doesn't go to infinity, but it doesn't move, now the I put it on the correct scale.

Does I Boat sell a PS, I tried to find it but I couldn't find it listed. I would like to support the web-site since I have benefited from so much good advice.

Thanks

Re: rebuild vs. Replace primer solenoid

I replaced the P/S yesterday on the motor and it did the trick. I knew it was working the second I heard the click when I pushed in the key (I never heard the click before). Once I held the key for about 8 seconds (as recommended several times on this site). The boat started right up.

Thanks you everyone you helped, and I hope this thread helps out others in the future.

Regards

Harry
