Hi,

I have recently purchased a 1997 Mercury 40ELPTO , I am stuck as I enter the serial #06565760 into Mercury parts and am told the engine is

  • 821303 - 200 H.P. (V-6) (1978-1988 COMBINED BOOKS)......................... :/ I cannot find the info for the engine and clearly on tag is the serial as well says 40hp dry weight 177lbs ect...
Regardless here is my situation, I bought the motor it is clean never seen salt. It had low compression 1 cylinder, I broke it down and yes piston number 3 is shot, Rings were seized the rest are good and the cylinder wall seems good besides one little bit which i think can be honed clean..

The engine is also missing the lower carb and power trim the rest is good leg, electronics and all.. I paid $300CND for it all which i thought was decent.. Now I must track parts in which I have done in a sense but I am stumped and my question is compatibility parts between merc outboards??

I have found a wrecker with early mid 90's merc parts engines..

Question is what years or models are compatible with 1. Powertrim, 2. Lower Carb, 3. Piston ??????

I appreciate any feedback which will help me, Thank You..

First thing first BCFisherman, :welcome: to iboats. Glad you could join us...

Yes Mercury is funny the way they manufactured their engines with serial numbers instead of year models. If you can't locate any info on your particulate engine, maybe you can look for model numbers or production numbers on the other carb and do an internet search for that part. I have no idea what years are compatible in the Mercury line. I sure others on here will chime in with better ideas and the Merc crowd most certainly will have better help... JMHO!

Thank You for the warm welcome gm280 :tea: I am glad to be here..

Update since I posted after searching online to no avail i went to the source (Engine block for second re-exam of the model number which appears on a Dollar sized and round shaped token stamped) It appears I read the leg plate sticker wrong & was off by 1 digit, 6 at the beginning was supposed to be a G. once i re-entered this into merc parts I came up with the proper engine. I am still unsure of the compatibility of parts at this time so any knowledge is still fully appreciated. I will update as I go along with my findings as this post may serve useful for others in similar situation.

Look forward to the haven of knowledge in regards to all aspects of boating on this site as well as the great people in the community.:triumphant:

BTW that dollar sized token with the serial number on it is a freeze plug, how did you find that, it is almost hidden behind the electrical trigger box and the starter???
