I've been rebuilding a 7.5 hp Mercury (mid 70's model, SN 4692326). The engine runs excelent except I'm getting exhaust out the water jet port and no water. I've replaced the water pump impeller and tested. It is getting water up to the powerhead. I am assuming that I have a blown head gasket or something. Does that sound about right?

Also, I notice a spot that looks like there is a spot to mount a small alternator. Is one made for this motor? If so, here can I find one?

Thanks,
BJ78Spider

Re: Rebuilding 7.5hp Mercury

Hi BJ,
There isn't a head gasket on that motor, so your water issue is likely related to the base gasket under the powerhead. There is also a grommet at the top of the water tube, which must be in place and in good shape. The pump may also be sucking air somewhere - are all pump gaskets in place and in good shape? Is water tube firmly seated in the pump housing?

As for the mount you see, it's for an electric starter. You probably won't find one new - you'll need to look for a parts motor that already has the electrics on it. If the motor were to have an alternator, it would be on the armature under the flywheel...
- Scott
