Hi,

I have recently started a project with my son. We traded in the go karts for a boat. Things have been going pretty smoothly until recently when we started to work on the engine. We can't seam to get it started. We have replaced alot of external parts but not many in the engine area. Our problem is the timing we can seam to figure out which cylinder is #1 (the front or the rear)? We are first time boat owners and need some help.

Thanks,
Chris

If it is a 4 cyl Volvo it is the front of the motor. I have a hose with a 1/4" pipe fitting I insert into the spark plug hole. I then turn the engine over with a ratchet on the dampner until I feel pressure on the hose, bring it around until the timing marks line up and this should be tdc. Be careful not to turn the motor over backwards as it can jump the timing belt.

on mercruisers number one cylinder is at the bow end of the boat.1-3-4-2 is the firing order.time to get yourself a manual and download from here;www.brunswickmarineemea.com.look under downloads.
could also get yourself some ideas off youtube too.

You can't get Service manuals at that site, only owners manuals.
