Hey everyone I was wondering if it was easy to rebuild / or clean my current starter or just buy a new one. The trouble i'm having with the starter now is that it just doesn't seem to have enough punch to turn the motor over, and it get stuck and sometimes all I hear is the relay clicking. I know the relay is good because It shows 12v when I turn the key to start.

If anyone knows of a good link to send me to for doing this that would be great or I should Just cough up 250$ for a new one. Thanks everyone.

Before you spend money on a starter, make sure you have a good battery, both ends of each battery cable is clean and tight. That means not just looking at them. Disassemble, clean and tighten securely. Charging a battery does not mean it's a good battery. A battery that cannot hold a charge cannot deliver the current a starter needs. If you don't want to be bothered with a load test, use the battery from your car or truck as a test. Starters can be rebuilt by any auto electric shop (starter/alternator/motor shop). Check the yellow pages. Also, just because you measure 12 volts at the solenoid does not mean the starter is seeing the required current -- in other words the contacts in the solenoid may not be making a good connection. Another test is to run a jumper cable from the POS terminal of the battery directly to the large terminal on the starter. If it spins, it's good. If not, it may still be the battery or ground cable.

Re: Rebuilding a starter for 225txrs

i have two brand new 1200 cc amp deka battery's. i did try to jump the starter and it was a hit or miss if it spun or not. the starter is from 1994. And I have two of there motors on my boat and one spins just fine for the most part. one thing i did was swap the starters aswell to see if it was the connections and it did the same thing on the other motor. So i have ruled 100% that it is the starter I found one online for 230$ but I am a big time DIY type of person and I was wondering if it was worth my time rebuilding the starter that I have. I did go and clean the connections they all looked great.

When using jumper cables to test the starter circuit you must use both + and - cables.

The reason is that the most common trouble in the wiring is the battery ground cable connection to the engine block.

However, it seems that you have verified a bad starter.

Most automotive starter rebuilders can rebuild your starter for a fraction of the price of a new one.

I have disassembled ones off of 25-35hp J/E before, inspected and cleaned up and reassembled. They are not that difficult, just like automotive starters.

If there is a problem with the brushes or bushings you can probably find the parts and fix yourself. But a shop will have the stuff to test and cut the armature if needed.

Thats exactly why I told him to use just one cable. If the starter spins its fine. If it doesn't you add the ground cable. If it now works its a battery cable issue. If it doesn't its the starter. Even with both cables connected it can still be a solenoid issue but that's easy to diagnose as well by jumping it.
